Students from Lausanne Collegiate School in Memphis, Tennessee engage in meaningful projects at Santa Elena Primary

Posted: Saturday, March 18, 2023. 10:20 am CST.

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: A delegation of 16 from the Lausanne Collegiate School in Memphis, Tennessee is at the Santa Elena Primary School for a 1-day camp.

Throughout the week, the team of 12 students and 4 chaperones engaged in 3 main projects at Santa Elena Primary.

Joy Stephens and Kyle Bichsel told BBN’s Zoila Gonzalez that they refurbished the basketball court, added new games, and painted the court.

They also built new picnic tables for the school’s lunch program and began a digital yearbook.

“We are from the Lausanne Collegiate School in Memphis, Tennessee. Twelve students and 4 chaperones are here. Some of the chaperones have been to Belize multiple times. So this is a longer-term visioning project at Santa Elena Primary. We have been to Santa Elena Primary before so we are able to connect with students and teachers on a deeper level and engage in these projects,” Stephens said.

The school hosted its fair on Thursday and the students from Memphis engaged in interactive games and played football with the students.

Today’s camp, “Let’s move it, Let’s build it” focuses on sports games and reading and building a roller coaster model.

Kyle is a Science teacher and he noted that this trip was a new experience since he usually does experiments with the students but this time around, the team built the backboard for the basketball courts and built picnic tables.

“The experience is different because we usually do experiments with the students but this time, we build the backboard for the basketball court and it was great to talk with the kids and see their excitement,” Kyle said.

“ On previous trips, we had been to Santa Elena Primary so we are able to build on that relationship the school shared their vision for the projects with us and we came to help,” he added.

Joy also shared that the digital yearbook will feature photos of all students, their teachers, and the school staff. It will be shared digitally with the administration so that parents can be able to view it.

Joy has been working in Belize for 14 years and 12 of those have been engaging with the students at Santa Elena Primary.
