The project is funded by the US Ambassadors Fund for Cultural Preservation in the amount of BZ $354,376.00.
“This is the largest contribution by this fund to any project in Belize.
The project is for a period of 12 months and will result in the restoration of 7 buildings at the Lamanai Reserve including the High Temple and the Ball Court,” Fonseca said.
Fonseca noted that the project will fully engage members of the local surrounding communities particularly Indian Church Village including local women’s groups.
The workers will be trained in conservation and Preservation techniques.
“We are grateful to Ambassador Kwan and the US Embassy in Belize for their continued support to NICH.
We are very proud of our Institute of Archaeology team under the very able leadership of Dr. Melissa Badillo for preparing this project and guiding its implementation,” Fonseca added.
Fonseca encouraged all Belizeans to do their part to conserve and preserve Belize’s rich history and culture for future generations of Belizeans.
