A growing threat to Taiwan: The importance of diplomatic recognition, Belize remains steadfast

Posted: Sunday, March 19, 2023. 7:33 pm CST.

By Breaking Belize News Staff: In a recent opinion piece in the Japan Times, author Grant Newsham highlights the growing threat to Taiwan as more countries switch diplomatic recognition to the People’s Republic of China. Honduras is the latest country to announce its plans to switch sides, following Nicaragua in December 2021. Newsham notes that eight countries have switched recognition in the past seven years, allowing China to gain a greater stronghold in regions where it was historically weak.

The article goes on to point out that as the number of countries recognizing Taiwan decreases, the country becomes more isolated. Additionally, as more countries recognize China, the diplomatic, economic, and military costs and penalties for China, if it decides to invade Taiwan, will be reduced.

The author notes that wars happen for many reasons, one of them being when the military balance tips in favor of one side over another. While the military value of the countries still recognizing Taiwan is negligible, the political symbolism is enormous.

Newsham highlights China’s long-term desire to take Taiwan, peacefully if possible, by force if necessary. He notes that China was previously militarily incapable of doing so, but this is no longer the case. The author also points out the potential expansion of the theater of conflict, which will work to China’s advantage.

The article concludes by suggesting that a bolder strategy is necessary to deter China, namely, the international community must recognize Taiwan diplomatically. If more countries recognized Taiwan, it would give Beijing pause as China would have to fight much of the world should it attack Taiwan.

Time is running out for Taiwan, and the world cannot look away, the author warns.

The situation in Taiwan remains tense, and the growing threat of military conflict is a concern for the international community. As more countries switch diplomatic recognition to China, Taiwan’s isolation grows, and the risks of military conflict increase.

Belize, along with the US, has remained steadfast in its support for Taiwan. Last week, Belize’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a release reiterating its support for the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Taiwan. The US also recently warned China that it would act if China decides to invade Taiwan.
