By Breaking Belize News Staff: A Dominican man is searching for his Jamaican father, who he believes was a sailor aboard a Belize-registered cargo ship, Pilar del Caribe, which wrecked in Jamaica in August 1995. Carlos Martinez, 27, has been on a quest to locate his father, Lincoln George Roach, who disappeared while his mother was still pregnant in 1995, just 10 months after their wedding. Martinez’s mother, Maria, got married to Roach in 1994, and shortly after, she got pregnant.

According to Martinez, his mother had informed him that Roach had journeyed to the Dominican Republic aboard the Pilar del Caribe for work. While in the Dominican Republic, Roach got married to Martinez’s mother and was looking forward to their growing family. However, an incident aboard the ship when it docked in Jamaica led to the police taking the captain and crew members of the vessel into custody, and Roach has not been heard from since.

The cargo ship, which is a Belize-registered vessel owned by CEA Lines Incorporated, is currently stranded on Buccaneer Beach in Kingston. In August 1995, lawmen boarded the vessel in search of illicit drugs while it was docked in Kingston. A search of the engine room on the vessel successfully located 16 wrapped packages of substances resembling cocaine. The cases were dismissed locally, and an international case was reportedly brought against some of the crew members by lawmen working in the United States.

Martinez and his mother have not given up hope that Roach is still alive and are hoping to locate him one day. Martinez longs to meet his father, embrace him, and learn about his Jamaican culture. He lived a very “difficult” childhood as he did not experience the love and warmth of having a father around, he told the Jamaica Observer. His mother was also left heartbroken, as the man she had envisioned spending the rest of her life with seemingly fell off the face of the earth when she needed him the most.
