Jomo Avila, fighting for his life against heart condition, needs urgent support

By Benjamin Flowers: Fundraising efforts are underway to get 44-year-old Jomo Avila, life-saving treatment for a heart condition that is rapidly deteriorating his health.

Avila suffered a heart attack in March of 2022 and has since been diagnosed with hypertensive heart disease, causing swellings all over his body and making it increasingly difficult for him to breathe.

He was dismissed from his employment in January 2023 and desperately turned to the Social Security Board for assistance but was denied his invalidity claim on the grounds that he needed 26 consecutive weeks’ worth of documentation from a doctor certifying the severity of the issue.

He told our newsroom that the SSB has replied to his repeated requests by giving him a 6-8 week time window for a response, with no guarantee that they will grant him any assistance.

“I am deteriorating fast and they want me to wait a month and a half more,” Avila said.

He is concerned that he may not make it to hear the SSB’s verdict.
