Salvadoran man fighting a deportation order in the Belize City Magistrate’s Court

By Breaking Belize News Staff: A Salvadoran national accused of living in Belize illegally for five years, is challenging the Immigration Department’s order submitted to the Belize City Magistrate’s Court to have him deported back to his country.

Twenty-four-year–old Nelson Ortiz appeared unrepresented in court on Friday, where he was given 12 pages worth of disclosure to use in his preparation for trial. The court will hear his submissions as to why he should not be deported on March 29.

Bautista is currently serving out a six-month sentence after pleading guilty to one count of failure to comply with the conditions of a visitor’s permit.

On Monday, February 13, 2023, Bautista-Ortiz pleaded guilty to failure to comply with the conditions of a visitors permit granted to him twice back in 2017 and in early 2018. He told the court he came to apply for asylum; however, the Immigration Department has no record of him making such an application.

He was fined $3,000 and ordered to pay forthwith because he had two convictions for the same offense.
