By Benjamin Flowers: Over 180 youth cadets from across the Belize District participated in yesterday’s Foot Drills Competition hosted by the Belize Police Department, but when the final scores were tallied it was the cadet corp from San Pedro that held the top spot.
The event was held at the Yabra basketball court near Wesley College on Saturday, with the Minister of Home Affairs and New Growth Industries Kareem Musa, as well as Commissioner of Police Chester Williams in attendance.
The cadets all put forward outstanding displays of teamwork, coordination, and creativity. San Pedro cadets came in first, Biscayne/Ladyville cadets placed second and Mahogany Heights cadets placed third. Mahogany Heights also took the prize for the most Creative and Innovative drill.
Assistant Commissioner of Police Howell Gillett, Head of the National Community Policing Unit, said that the competition as well as the cadet corps work in tandem with the department’s mission of forming better relationships with youth and addressing the root causes of crime by providing youths positive outlets and extra-curricular activities.
“At present, we have just over 800 cadets countrywide. It is our strategic intention to increase this number to 2000,” Gillett said.
Gillett also extended his congratulations to all participants in the competition.
