Belize beat Suriname 3-0, finish 7th in NORCECA U19 Pan American Cup

By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Belize defeated Suriname in straight sets to finish in seventh place at the NORCECA U19 Pan American Cup in Guatemala City in Saturday.

Outside hitters Preston Smith led Belize with 15 points on 14 kills and one block. Eleazar Mejía tallied 14 kills for 14 points.

Suriname’s opposite hitter Meson Anakaba scored 14 points on 12 kills.

The Belize National Team finished the tournament with a 1-4 win-loss record while Suriname finished in eighth place with a 0-5 record.

Belize won over the South American side 36-25 in attacks, 6-4 in blocks, and 9-2 in serves, but made four more errors than Suriname (28-24).

“This win is very good for our country and by 3-0 it’s even better,” Belize head coach Albert Humes said after the match.

“Sadly we couldn’t put this type of playing in yesterday’s game but we are satisfied. I would like to thank NORCECA for the invitation and give us this type of exposure, making it a learning experience for our team so we can go back home and get ready for the Central American Championship, Belize will be hosting this year. That will be a good boost for our people to come out and support our men’s program.”

The United States beat Mexico 3-0 (25-23, 25-22, 25-29) to win the Norceca Pan American Cup undefeated with a 5-0 record. US captain Tread Rosenthal won the Most Valuable Player Award.

Puerto Rico won the bronze medal in a 3-2 (24-26, 25,22,18-25, 25-22,15-12) victory over Costa Rica.

Guatemala finished fifth on a 3-0 (26-24, 25-21, 25-22) win over Nicaragua.
