Family’s claim of “home invasion” may be mischievous, police say

By Aaron Humes: It has the ring of truth – a family at home set upon by three armed thugs demanding money – even threatening to kill if they don’t get what they want.

But the devil appears to be in the details according to the Belize Police Department, who at present are not buying what Victor Gutierrez is selling.

Gutierrez claimed that on Thursday afternoon at his home, he, his wife, and their seven-year-old daughter were menaced by two men of Maya descent and the other Hispanic, carrying a firearm. They took $290 from a family Bible in the house and demanded more by the following morning, twice threatening to kill Gutierrez and his entire family and dump them in the bushes in Cayo.

But the police are not sitting well with the notion that the robbers wore “police boots” because, apparently, there is no such thing according to Police Commissioner Chester Williams who corrected a media house publicly on Sunday after seeing their report.

Today, Communications Director, Assistant Superintendent of Police Fitzroy Yearwood went even further, saying there are discrepancies in that report and that they consider the report mischief. Now, the investigation is on Gutierrez: “We are treating this report as a mischievous report after investigators have found too many discrepancies in his initial statement that cannot be proven.”

ASP Yearwood clarified the “police boots” claim as follows: “We don’t have a particular type of boots that we would want to claim that is solely used by police officers. Of course, it would be like the uniform where you will be deemed to be using that illegally if that was a police-type boots. One, we don’t have that. I can show you that the [boots I wear are] much different from what other officers would be wearing.”

If the report is officially found to be mischievous and not verifiable, it will be Gutierrez being charged for committing a mischievous act.
