By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The Griga Dream Ballers aren’t letting up any at all demonstrating that they are for real, dropping the Digi Belize City Defenders 77-72 on Saturday and keeping pace with Benny’s Belize Hurricanes in the Belize Elite Basketball League.
Both the Dream Ballers and Canes are sitting atop the standings with a 6-2 record but what makes the difference right now is that Griga are on a five-game winning streak. Along with the Orange Walk Running Rebels, they are playing the hottest ball in Belize. You just have to ask the Defenders, who put up a good fight, but felt the sting last Saturday night in Dangriga.
Edgar Mitchell led Griga with 23 points, 4 rebounds, and 4 assists. Jahiem Ciego scored 20 while scraping 8 off the glass. D’Von Campbell added 15 points.
Nigel Jones was the Defenders front man with 23 points, 7 boards, and 3 assists. Treandus Branch totalled 16 points and 6 rebounds. Farron Louriano contributed 14 and Mykeil Tzul 13.
The Defenders fell to a 4-4 record remaining in fourth place.
