International News: Pope Francis offers prayers for earthquake victims in Ecuador and Peru

Posted: Monday, March 20, 2023. 11:09 pm CST.

By Breaking Belize News Staff: Pope Francis offered prayers on Sunday for the victims of a devastating earthquake that struck Ecuador and parts of Peru on Saturday. The Pope expressed his condolences during his weekly Sunday noon blessing, recalling that the 6.8-magnitude earthquake caused death, injuries and heavy damage.

“I’m close to the Ecuadorean people and assure them of my prayers for the dead and suffering,” Francis said.

The earthquake that struck on Saturday killed at least 15 people and injured almost 500 more. It brought down homes and buildings in vastly different communities, from coastal areas to the highlands. At least one of the deaths was reported in Peru.

The Pope’s message of support for the victims of the earthquake was delivered as rescue workers continued to search for survivors in the rubble. The earthquake’s impact was felt across a wide area of Ecuador and Peru, with some people fleeing their homes in panic.

According to the Associated Press, Ecuador’s government has declared a state of emergency in six provinces following the earthquake. The government has also authorized the use of emergency funds to help with recovery efforts.

The earthquake is the latest natural disaster to strike Ecuador in recent years. In 2016, a 7.8-magnitude earthquake killed more than 650 people and injured thousands more. The government’s response to that disaster was widely criticized, with many people accusing officials of failing to act quickly enough to provide aid to those affected.

The Pope’s message of support for the victims of the earthquake is likely to be welcomed by many people in Ecuador and Peru, who have been affected by the disaster. The Pope has been known to offer words of comfort and support in times of crisis, and his message is likely to provide some solace to those affected by the earthquake.
