By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Westrac Alliance’s Byron Pope beat eight other cyclists in the final sprint to win the G-Flow/Cayo Cargo’s 5th Annual Ernest Meighan Cycling Classic organized by the Cycling Federation of Belize on Sunday, March 19.
This was Pope’s second Classic in one week as he had taken the 42nd Annual Westrac Pure Guard Belmopan Cycling Classic on Sunday, March 12.
Pope clocked 4 hours, 49 minutes, and 57 seconds (4:49:57) in leading the pack of nine to capture top spot in the 120-mile race which started at 8:00 am in front of Leslie’s Imports in Belize City, travelled to Mt. Hope in Georgeville, and returned to Leslie’s Import’s.
Gregory Lovell of Team Lovell finished second, G-Flow’s Shawn Codd was third, FAL Cycling’s Joslyn Chavarria Jr fourth, and CANO Road Rage’s Goran Gabourel fifth.
The next four were SPD Kulture’s Kent ‘Bob’ Gabourel (6), Rolling Shattaz-BZ Boys’ Dejuan Hyde (7), Westrac Alliance’s Angel Tzib (8), and Westrac’s Fernando Rosado (9).
Westrac Alliance’s Wasani Castro rode in tenth in 4:50:58.
Lovell was the first Masters followed by Gabourel and Tzib.
Sherman Thomas topped the Masters 4/5 Category. Preston Martinez was second.
