Wonder Women highlight: Gladis Novelo, General Manager at Western Gas Company Limited

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: In celebrating women’s month, around the country, outstanding Belizean women are being highlighted for their dedication and commitment to Belize’s growth and development.

Today’s feature is on Gladis Claribel Novelo. Gladis was born in Orange Walk but migrated to Cayo with her mom, Leonarda Novelo, when she was 7 years old.

Gladis has been employed at Western Gas Company for 16 years.

At 19 years of age, Gladis began working as a secretary at the BIG-H Company.

She held that post for 4 years and was later promoted to manager to oversee the business operations and staff.

Gladis also held other office positions after being at the Big-H Company, such as Agent assistant for Atlantic Insurance, DHL courier service, Secretary at a convenience store and gas Station formerly known then as Texaco Gas Station for another 6 years.

Thereafter, Gladis joined the marketing department of Gitz Office Supplies. Her time spent there made her realized that she had a greater calling in management.

During this time, Gladis says that she entered the most challenging season for a woman being a single mom and hitting rock bottom.

However, her determination led her to join the Western Gas Company team as an Account Receivable Clerk. At that time, she did not realize this was the ladder to drive her upwards for 16 years to now being the General Manager of a huge company which is dominated by 75 percent male.

 She has made gender inequality a victorious triumph.

Gladis says that holding a managerial position has taught her the importance of people relationship and humility. It created a character in her to build team relations, being stern and inspired to achieve a common goal to which she has successfully achieved.

This General Manager is also a woman, a single mother who began her career from where many young women are.

“Never underestimate the barriers of Education as a manager,” Gladis notes.

Gladis says that she proudly carries out her duties as General Manager.

She has a high school diploma and encourages other women to work hard, be determined since learning new skills can make their goals a reality.

“With consistency, perseverance, good character and determination we all can achieve success beyond our expectations,” she said.

Novelo stands as a living proof to our community, young woman and single mothers.
