Belize Marketing and Development Corporation Launches Big Falls Rice, Promotes Local Tradition and Supports Small Farmers

By Breaking Belize News: The Belize Marketing and Development Corporation (BMDC) has unveiled its latest product, Big Falls Rice Truly Southern Brand, during an official launch ceremony on March 17, 2023. The event was attended by government officials, including Jose Abelardo Mai, Minister of Agriculture Food Security and Enterprise; Oscar Requeña, Minister of Rural Transformation, Community Development, Local Government & Labour; and Michael Espat, Minister of State in the Ministry of Finance, Economic Development & Investment.

The ministers emphasized the importance of the rice mill for local farmers and highlighted the benefits of having the mill under operation for Belizeans. There are two types of farming method being used, the milpa and the “industrialized” mechanized farming; currently it is the mechanized rice being sold and BMDC plans to promote Milpa rice as a brand in the near future. They also underlined the significance of preserving the traditional milpa rice harvesting methods in the Toledo District. After the ceremony, attendees had the opportunity to sample the new rice brand, showcasing its high quality.

Big Falls Rice aims to provide Belizeans with premium, low-cost rice while supporting Toledo’s rice farmers and preserving the region’s cultural traditions. The BMDC, a statutory body under the Ministry of Agriculture, Food Security and Enterprise, primarily functions as the marketing arm for Belizean products.

This initiative not only strengthens the local economy but also showcases the commitment of the Belizean government to support small farmers doing mechanize farming and traditional agricultural practices, ensuring a sustainable future for the country’s rice industry.
