‘Forests and Health’; International Day of forests!

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Today, the Ministry of Sustainable Development, Climate Change and Disaster Risk Management and the Belize Forest Department joined the world in observing International Day of forests.

The day is being celebrated under the theme, ‘Forests and Health’.

The day serves to remind that “healthy forests promote healthy people.”

The Belize Forest Department and the Ministry manage Belize’s forests through sustainable forest management which requires the balancing of its resource usage and sustainability.

The Ministry continues it conservation of resources within the protected areas system in co-management with Non-Governmental Organizations and communities, who are the custodians of Belize’s forests.

“We seek to maintain a delicate balance between humans and wildlife, to ease the conflict in the competition of resources; and ensure the restoration of degraded ecosystems by replanting trees in areas that have been cleared, to recover ecosystem functions.

We continue our efforts of forest sustainability, for the benefit is passed down from our generation to the next,” the Ministry noted.
