By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Hol Chan Marine Reserve (HCMR) is urging all boat captains to look out for marine life while navigating.
HCMR noted that in January, Elite Adventures Tours noticed a dead Loggerhead turtle floating in the water. The turtle had a diagonal cut across its carapace, which was suspected to be from a boat propeller.
Amigos Del Mar and guests also saw a sea turtle in distress near the shore among the sargassum.
The baby Hawksbill Turtle (Eretmochelys imbricata) appeared to be exhausted from swimming in the choppy seas. Fortunately there were no visible signs of injury.
Earlier this month, a local fisherman found a baby sea turtle struggling in the rough waves and trapped in Sargassum in front of Costa Blue Hotel.
The baby turtle was identified as a Green Turtle (Chelonia mydas). Despite administering antibiotics, the turtle died.
Another floating dead turtle was found on March 9, 2023. The turtle was identified as a mature female loggerhead sea turtle (Caretta caretta) and was in early stages of decomposition.
HCMR thanks the community for reporting sea turtle strandings.
“As part of our mandate at HCMR, we are responsible for the care, rehabilitation and unfortunately the disposal of these creatures,” the Reserve noted.
