Manuel Ramos, charged for traffic accident that killed Joshua Martinez, granted bail

By Breaking Belize News Staff: Fifty-two-year-old Manuel Ramos is out on bail after being charged today for a traffic accident that killed a man and injured two others, one of whom is a police officer.

Ramos appeared before Senior Magistrate Baja Shoman where he was read a total of five charges: one count of manslaughter by negligence for the death of 22-year-old, Joshua Martinez; one count of causing death by careless conduct; one count of drove motor vehicle without due care and attention; one count of drove motor vehicle with alcohol concentration above the prescribed limit and one count of negligent harm for causing injuries to Tyreec Usher.

There was no objection to bail and it was granted to him in the sum of $5,000 plus one surety or two sureties of $2,500 each, which he managed to meet.

He is due back in court on May 22.

Ramos still has pending charges with respect to Police Constable David Griffith, who was seriously injured in the incident.

Police say that around 4:30 a.m. on Saturday, March 18, Martinez and Griffith were parked on the side of the road between miles 8 and 9 on the Philip Goldson Highway, assisting Usher, whose vehicle had broken down. Ramos reportedly drove off the road and into the driver’s side of Martinez’s vehicle, while he was in the driver’s seat. Martinez was killed on the spot.
