By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Today, Honduran Foreign Minister Eduardo Reina denied that his country requested $2.5 billion from Taiwan just before the country’s President announced that Honduras was seeking to open relations with China.
According to Reuters, Reina said that the $2.5 billion was “not a donation,” but rather “a negotiated refinancing mechanism.”
However, a source confirmed that Honduras had requested that assistance a day before Honduran President Xiomara Castro said her government would seek to open relations with China.
After the announcement, several allies including Belize reiterated their support for Taiwan.
