PUP Cayo Central cancels fundraising for Cristo Rey cancer patient organized by UDP standard bearer

Posted: Wednesday, March 22, 2023. 1:58 pm CST.

By BBN Staff: UDP Standard bearer for Cayo Central, Mark O’Brien and his committee had scheduled a 5-a-side football marathon for this Sunday in Cristo Rey, Cayo.

The marathon was being held to fundraise for a cancer patient from the village.

The funds would have been used to pay for medical expenses.

However, today, O’Brien posted to Facebook that the marathon has been cancelled.

“My sincere apologies. 5 a side football marathon in Cristo Rey Sunday cancelled. PUP say NO! OB cannot use the football field,” O’Brien said.

O’Brien told BBN that the cancer patient reached out for assistance and they went ahead and planned the marathon along with the support of the Village Chairman and residents.

“The Chairman had said go ahead and the residents were supporting the event since it is for a worthy cause to help the cancer patient. But, now, the chairman informed me that he was given orders from the Cayo Central PUP executive that they are not allowing me to use the facility or the equipment, the goal posts. So the activities have been cancelled,” O’Brien said.

O’Brien says that this is not the first time he has been blocked due to politics.

Recently, he planned to engage youths in a sporting event at the Santa Elena Sports Complex but was told that he was not given permission to use.
