By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Belizeans continue to seek medical specialists and professionals at home.
However, as the demand for urologists and specialized physicians grows in Belize, there has been a shortage of trained urologists since not many are venturing into this field.
Urologists are doctors that specialize in the study and treatment of disorders of the urinary system.
During an interview with Love FM, Urologist, Dr. Byron Simmons noted that due to this shortage, people experience longer wait times.
Simmons also said that there is a need for physicians to consider the field of urology.
“We have approximately about six to seven urologists total and it’s obviously the product of long term I think it is something that has been lacking over the course of years not only urology but in medicine in general and we have not taken up the mantra in regards to resolving these problems, at least tackling them in a systemic fashion gradually over the course of time. So they have just built up and now we have what is the problem we have at hand,” Simmons said.
Simmons is encouraging physicians to train and specialize in urology and other specialties needed in Belize.
