Whatever happened to tackling corruption?

Posted: Wednesday, March 22, 2023. 10:52 pm CST.

By Aaron Humes: We may not hear much about it – but Leader of the Opposition Moses “Shyne” Barrow intimated that improper doings are afoot by the current PUP administration.

At the very start of his presentation, Barrow alleged that investors in Belize have told him that they have been subject to “bureaucratic molasses” at Government Ministries and “shaken down” several times to get basic services.

Later, he referred to a promise about anti-corruption: “…stopping corruption, Prime Minister said he was going to legislate an anti-corruption body that was made up of private, reputable citizens and he was going to the U.N. and ask them to give him three names, nothing. You have members of Cabinet that have been shuffled but nothing else.”

The Government is “fake it till you make it” – and “now that they have made it, da just fi dehn personally mek it,” Barrow scoffed, later listing the many infrastructure projects started under the UDP that he says the PUP have been taking credit for – but it is the UDP that have been more successful politically since Independence and the proof is in the current Budget Speech.

As Leader of the Opposition, Briceño is on the record as planning legislation that would authorize full audits of each Government Ministry and loudly promised to make sure each and every person found guilty of corruption would be jailed.

Belize is preparing for an UNCAC Country Review among others and some legislative reform has been planned and/or introduced, particularly the creation of the People’s Constitutional Committee that is overseeing review of the Constitution.
