World Water Day: Accelerating the change to solve the water and sanitation crisis

Posted: Wednesday, March 22, 2023. 11:41 am CST.

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: World Water Day is observed on March 22 every year.

The day is set aside to celebrate water and raise awareness of the 2 billion people living without access to safe water.

The day is being observed under the theme, “Accelerating the change to solve the water and sanitation crisis”.

Data from the United Nations indicate that today, 1 in 4 people – 2 billion people worldwide – lack safe drinking water and 1.4 million people die annually due to poor water, sanitation and hygiene.

Special Envoy for the Development of Families and Children, Rossana Briceño noted that we don’t always appreciate the need to use water wisely.

“Really, we should be concerned and be a bit more conscious of how we use water and how much.

Fresh water is a limited resource, making water conservation an important factor for the environment. With population growth, expansion of industry, increasing levels of development activity, and the potential for climate change impacts there is increasing pressure placed on our water resources,” she said.

Briceño encourages everyone to be mindful of how much and how we use this precious resource.
