By Aaron Humes: The Ministry of Education, Culture, Science and Technology (MoECST) in a statement says it has been made aware of an alleged confrontation between a student and teacher at Canaan Seventh Day Adventist (SDA) High School in Belize City which occurred on Wednesday.
A short video of the incident made available to us appears to show the teacher, armed with a stick, struggling with a young male student whom he is demanding leave his class. He ultimately succeeds in shoving the student outside the class door.
The Ministry says it takes a dim view of the behaviour displayed by both parties although it points out that all of the details have not been established and that it is awaiting a full report.
As it explains, “Such behaviours only seek to undermine the trust that should encompass student-teacher relationships in an amicable and safe classroom setting.”
The Ministry says it will continue to liaise with the Managing Authority of the institution to chart a way forward with respect to this matter.
The school was previously in the news for public accusations that two teachers were engaged in appropriate behaviour with female students – one has since left the school and the other, we are reliably informed, remains on leave as his case is further investigated. The parent who broke that scandal two months ago has since removed his child from the school.
