By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The Corozal District Agriculture Coordinator Fred Roches conducted the first session of sheep farmers field school this week as part of the Ministry of Agriculture, Food Security and Enterprise (MAFSE) program to promote sheep farming.
According to MAFSE, Roches conducted the first session of the sheep farmers field school with members of Corozal Sheep Cooperative on Wednesday, March 22.
“The main objectives were 1. Facilitate Sheep farmers to learn innovative production systems and be able to adapt to climate change. 2. Empower Sheep farmers with knowledge, skills and critical decision making,” MAFSE said.
The Ministry of Agriculture added that the second training session will be held on Wednesday, April 19.
The Ministry of Agriculture with the support of the Taiwan ICDF and FFTP have a standing commitment to food security in Belize and the growth of the sheep and goat industry through sector development and improvement is paramount to that effort.
At this point, the sheep and goat population in Belize surpasses the 17,000 mark and is growing.
The Belize-Taiwan Sheep and Goat Project Phase II, signed by the Governments of Taiwan and Belize in March 2020, has a budget of US$3 million and is being implemented during a four-year period.
Andrew Mejia, MAFSE’s Coordinator of the Sheep and Goat Project, MAFSE has conducted several technical capacity building workshops plus eighty Lamb and Culinary Craft Workshops as well.
