By BBN Staff: On March 22, 2023, BBN reported on a situation in Cayo Central where UDP standard bearer Mark O’Brien said he had organized a fundraising for a cancer patient from Cristo Rey.
Following his post on Facebook that the fundraiser was canceled after he was denied permission to use the field, the chairman of Cristo Rey Village, Wilmer Guerra has issued a statement saying that there is no official statement from the village council on the prohibition to use the field.
“In the short time that I have served, I have always, to the best of my abilities, worked with the people and for the people, with no exceptions; not looking at colors, sex, religion, or political affiliation. Yesterday the news broke about a fundraiser that was being prohibited, because the football field cannot be used. I want to reiterate that NO ONE at ANY TIME can dictate, who uses the football field. It is a public space, and while it is the village council’s responsibility to maintain it operational, it’s use cannot be prohibited, much less for a fundraiser, and I have always coordinated and made sure that this statement remains true,” Guerra noted.
“At no time was the use of the football field completely prohibited and much less because of political colors. No official statement came from the village council as to the prohibition of the use of the football field and I was still in diplomatic communication with everyone involved when the news broke,” Guerra added.
The chairman further denounced what he referred to as “political antics” for personal agendas.
“I, want to make it clear that as someone serving the community, I cannot and will not affiliate to a political party. I remain diplomatic with anyone willing to work for the village, without any biasness and remain committed to “one people, one community,” he ended.
