By Benjamin Flowers: To assist police with evidence gathering and investigations, the Ministry of Home Affairs and New Growth industries has begun the work of rolling out 80 new security cameras.
Minister of Home Affairs, Kareem Musa, explained during his address yesterday on day one of the national budget debate in Belmopan, that all the cameras are high-definition, closed circuit television (CCTV) cameras, with facial recognition capabilities.
Musa noted that 30 of those cameras will be installed in San Pedro and that the tender process has already been completed through a program with the Central American Bank for Economic Integration – CABEI, for the procurement of another 50. He stressed that these cameras will be installed this year and that several of them will be installed along the John Smith Link Road.
Musa said that the police department has undergone a “culture shift from oppression and suppression to smart policing that relies on innovation and technology and building healthy relationships…”
