By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Today, Senior Labour Officers and Labour Officers are engaged in a 3-day certificate Court Room Etiquette and Basic Court Procedures Training Session offered by the University of the West Indies (UWI).
The training is being facilitated by Marcia Mohabir and Stevanni Duncan-Ferrari, both Attorneys at Law.
As part of the labour function, Labour Officers prosecute labour cases at the magistrate court.
The training session will allow Labour Officers to gain more knowledge and skills in understanding their specific roles in the courtroom, understand proper courtroom etiquette, including matters concerning dress, manner of speech, and proper court language, and have a working knowledge of the basic procedures for initiating proceedings in both Magistrate’s and Supreme Court.
In addition, labour officers will develop practical skills such as preparing and drafting basic documents used in civil actions, such as statements of case and affidavits.
