Belize defender Ian Gaynair says Belize sent Guatemala, Nicaragua coaches packing in 2013

Belize may not have beaten Guatemala yet in a competitive senior football match, but according to Fútbol de Guatemala, Belize have had their moments against Guatemala.

“Belize already knows what it is like to leave us out of a Gold Cup,” Fútbol de Guatemala headlined a post on Thursday, March 23, as the Guatemala National Team landed at the Philip Goldson International Airport for their game against the Belize Men’s National Team (BMNT) on Friday in Belmopan.

Back in 2013, Belize drew 0-0 twice against Guatemala in January at the Central American Nations Cup in San Jose, Costa Rica, and later in June here in Belize.

Fútbol de Guatemala remembers that Guatemala had drawn with Nicaragua and needed to beat Belize to qualify to the Gold Cup. Belize shocked them, pulling a scoreless draw that felt like a victory as it qualified the BMNT to their only Concacaf Gold Cup and eliminated Guatemala.

Ian Gaynair, defender for the BMNT, remembers as well. Fútbol de Guatemala published a picture of him against a Guatemalan forward causing Gaynair to say that Belize sent both the Nicaraguan and Guatemalan coaches (Brazilian Ever Hugo Almeida was Guatemala’s coach) packing as they were let go after that tournament.

“I made both Guatemala and Nicaragua coaches lost their jobs,” Gaynair said, amazed at Fútbol de Guatemala posting his picture.

“Look who pic Guatemala posted up, the last time they need to qualify and ran into Belize, guess who help to stop them. I like mash up they tacos vendors.”

Gaynair went on to score Belize’s only goal at the 2013 Concacaf Gold Cup against the United States.

While Fútbol de Guatemala hopes ‘history doesn’t repeat itself,’ Belizeans are surely hoping that the BMNT finally gets a win over Guatemala.
