Belize trails Guatemala 2-1 at halftime in CONCACAF Nations League match

Posted: Friday, March 24, 2023. 9:00 pm CST.

By Aaron Humes: A mostly untested Belize side was undone twice by a Guatemala side intent on challenging for a place in the CONCACAF Gold Cup at the FFB Stadium in Belmopan before finding a late lifeline.

Oscar Castellanos got beyond the defence and beat goalkeeper Charles Tillett to open the scoring in the 30th minute. Tillett had saved a penalty earlier in the 16th minute from Castellanos after a foul.

Oscar Santis then doubled Guatemala’s lead 14 minutes later with good work to fool a screened Tillett.

But barely a minute later, midfielder Jordy Polanco, derided as the shortest man on the field by some, pulled one back for the Jaguars with a crisp header to send the fans in the sold-out FFB Stadium to the break in some cheer.

With no relegation in place from this year’s CONCACAF Nations League and direct qualification to the Gold Cup out of reach, Belize is mostly playing for pride and in this case defending home field. Guatemala will still be keen to take all three points to bolster their chances at winning the group.

Stay tuned for second-half action results later on.
