Commissioner of Police updates on recent murder investigations during visit to Orange Walk

By Aaron Humes: Things in the crime business have slowed down considerably, but Commissioner of Police Chester Williams and his men cannot afford a day off in the fight to keep Belizeans safe.

The Commissioner this week attended a village meeting in Trial Farm, Orange Walk District, among Belize’s largest villages and a heartbeat away from Orange Walk Town, to discuss a recent surge of violence there. The Department is looking into building a substation in the area to complement the main Orange Walk Town station along the Otro Benque Road. Until then, specialized units under the Commander of Operations Assistant Commissioner Alford Grinage will be assigned to conduct raids and “put pressure” on the criminals. Plans are also in effect with regard to establishing community-based programs in the village.

In regard to the recent murders of Raheem Arnold in Belize City and Floyd Montero in Roaring Creek, the Commissioner reported that in the former Police appear to have pinpointed those responsible but continue to search for them, while they are still chasing leads in the latter: “The police continue to do what we can to be able to deal with these issues as they manifest themselves, but again, we have to understand that we can’t prevent everything from occurring. All in all, the city has been doing well where crime is concerned and it all has to do with the all-of-government approach and effective policing and we want to ensure that trend continues.”

As for the most recent murders in Orange Walk, those of Byron Herrera and Eufemio Garcia, police investigations have concluded that they were related to the drug trade as the Commissioner explained: “It’s not a gang issue, but more drugs and again, like I said before ensuring that we go after these people and slow down their business or stop it is the way to go and what has been said here that these people are selling drugs to young people. It cannot be. As police, we must do our part to make sure that we do not allow that to happen…”
