Guatemala holds on for 2-1 win against Belize after open second half

Posted: Friday, March 24, 2023. 10:04 pm CST.

By Aaron Humes: The Jaguars came up short at the FFB Stadium after each side had their chances in the second half.

A raft of changes ensured Belize took the game to Guatemala in the second half but they never could quite find the effort in the final third against a well-drilled opponent.

Meanwhile, Guatemala was content to mostly defend their lead and try occasional counters looking for a killer third goal that never came.

The result eliminates Belize entirely from Gold Cup qualification contention and condemns the Jaguars to last place even with a win on the road at the Dominican Republic next week. Guatemala and French Guiana will battle for top place in the group with no relegation on offer.
