By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: March is being celebrated as Child Stimulation Month under the theme, “We are strong, learning and growing”.
Today, the Santa Elena Baptist Pre-School hosted their Culture Day featuring activities, food and traditions of the cultures of Belize.
Baptist District Manager, Manuel Cowo welcomed educators, parents and students to the event.
The keynote address was given by BBN’s Zoila Gonzalez.
“We are one country, one people. We celebrate our cultures with rich traditions and food. Whether you are Maya, Mestizo, Creole, Garifuna, Chinese, East Indian, or Mennonite, we are one and this is home! We must always be proud of who we are, proud of our roots and our heritage,” Gonzalez said.
The Maya ethnic group displayed the inside of a traditional Maya home, pottery and food.
Students also did a presentation on the numbers in Maya.
While the Garifuna group brought out the drums, the Mestizo displayed the fogon and the Creole showed off their home made of timber.
Visitors enjoyed the vibrant cultural presentations and food.
At the end of the exceptional presentations, the Maya group took 1st place and all students were awarded for their hard work and dedication.
Special thanks to Teacher Lela Cowo, Teacher Virginia and Teacher Yoli for organizing this event annually.
