SOS lawsuits begin; Former employees take security company to court over unpaid wages

Posted: Friday, March 24, 2023. 10:33 am CST.

By Breaking Belize News: This week, Paul Garcia, owner of Security Oriented Services (SOS), saw the first of several civil claims against him called up in the Belize City Magistrate’s Court, by former employees who are suing for unpaid wages.

However, the case was adjourned as quickly as it began after Garcia’s attorney, Orson Elrington, sent a letter to the Magistrate informing that he could not be present and asking for a rescheduling.

The court granted the request and set April 24 as the new date. The Magistrate did note that many of the plaintiffs were present for the session and stressed that the case will begin on April 24.

Present at the hearing were Denfield Robinson, Trevor Avilez Whitfield, Denise Rosa – one of several oldest employees who was about to complete 10 years of service with SOS; Donovan Franzua, Keedar Neal, Linsford Lopez, Leonnie Castillo, Allison Claire, 71, one of the oldest in age and who has 11 years with the company, Michael Kent Watler, Trevor Avilez, Tiffany Pollard, and Goldburn Maskall. Those who filed lawsuits but were not present for the hearing were Therese Michigan, Pamela Olivera and Courtney Rivers.

The lawsuits follow a number of industrial actions taken by the workers after SOS paid them only portions of their bi-weekly wages for some months, and in other instances, did not pay them at all. Many of the workers expressed frustration as they tried calling Garcia but he refused to take their calls.
