By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Today, the U.S. State Department confirmed that it was aware of reports of 2 U.S. citizens missing in Haiti, Reuters report.
A reported relative of the couple began an online petition after Americans, Abigail Toussaint, and Jean-Dickens Toussaint, both 33, were abducted near the capital Port-au-Prince.
The couple were visiting family in Haiti.
“We are aware of reports of two U.S. citizens missing in Haiti. When a U.S. citizen is missing, we work closely with local authorities as they carry out their search efforts, and we share information with families however we can,” a U.S. State Department spokesperson said.
Since the 2021 assassination of President Jovenel Moise, violent gangs have engaged in criminal activities.
Violent turf wars have left thousands dead and thousands more displaced.
