International News: U.S. State Department monitor reports of kidnapped Americans in Haiti

Posted: Saturday, March 25, 2023. 2:05 pm CST.

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Today, the U.S. State Department confirmed that it was aware of reports of 2 U.S. citizens missing in Haiti, Reuters report.

A reported relative of the couple began an online petition after Americans, Abigail Toussaint, and Jean-Dickens Toussaint, both 33, were abducted near the capital Port-au-Prince.

The couple were visiting family in Haiti.

“We are aware of reports of two U.S. citizens missing in Haiti. When a U.S. citizen is missing, we work closely with local authorities as they carry out their search efforts, and we share information with families however we can,” a U.S. State Department spokesperson said.

Since the 2021 assassination of President Jovenel Moise, violent gangs have engaged in criminal activities.

Violent turf wars have left thousands dead and thousands more displaced.
