Elmer Nah says unlicensed ammunition did not belong to him, Headed back to court in April

By Breaking Belize News Staff: Police Corporal Elmer Nah, his wife Ephephania Caliz and his brother-in-law, interdicted Police Constable, Manuel Caliz have been given the opportunity to present their defense in their unlicensed ammunition case, which is set to continue next month.

The trio appeared in court last week, charged jointly on a single count of kept unlicensed ammunition with respect to 139 live rounds of high-caliber ammunition found in Nah’s vehicle during a police search.

In court, Nah gave a sworn statement on the witness stand and was cross examined by the prosecution, Ephephania Caliz gave an unsworn statement from the dock and Manuel Caliz chose to remain silent and not offer a defense.

Nah testified that he was, in fact, in possession of the ammunition, but the bullets did not belong to him. He explained that he was a member of the specialized police unit the Special Commanders Operations Support Team and had received a call from a fellow officer Corporal Richard Arnold, who asked him to bring the bullets and a bullet proof vest for him to use on an operation.

Nah said he was taking the bullets to Corporal Arnold when he was stopped by Cpl.Mariano Chun, who said that a search would be conducted on his vehicle. He went on to say that he had declared the ammunition when asked by Cpl. Chun if he had anything to declare.

Ephephania Caliz told the court in her statement that she had no knowledge of the bullets in the vehicle.

Their next court hearing has been scheduled for April 24.
