By Breaking Belize News Staff: A farmer from Freetown Sibun, Belize District, has been remanded to the Belize Central Prison over unlicensed firearms and ammunition.

Thirty-two-year-old Ivan Amaya appeared in the Belize City Magistrate’s Court on Friday charged with one count of kept unlicensed firearm and one count kept unlicensed ammunition with respect to a 12-gauge shotgun and six shotgun cartridges.

He pleaded not guilty to the charge, but due to the nature of the offense bail could not be granted at the Magistrate level and he was remanded until May 26. Amaya can apply for bail via the Supreme Court through the assistance of an attorney.

On Wednesday, March 22, police conducted a search of Amaya’s home looking for items stolen from a recently reported burglary. When the officers found the shotgun they asked him if he had a license and he explained that he does not and that the owner of the farm left the shotgun with him for him to use while he is there.
