By Breaking Belize News Staff: The Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions has downgraded the charge against 49-year-old Roberto Gilharry, who was initially charged with the attempted murder of his brother-in-law, 52-year-old Luis Gordon.
Gilharry along with his attorney Richard “Dickie” Bradley, appeared in court on Thursday to learn that the attempted murder charge had been downgraded to one count of use of deadly means of harm. The downgrade moves the charges from an indictable matter, which can only be heard at the High Court of Belize, to a Summary matter which can be heard in the Magistrate’s Court. Penalties for conviction at the Magistrate level can be notably lighter than at the High Court.
Gilharry pleaded not guilty to the charge and since he was already out on Supreme Court bail, Gilharry was allowed to leave. He is due back in court on June 28.
The incident in question occurred in 2021, when Gilharry allegedly attacked Gordon with a spear gun.
Notably, Gilharry and Gordon have a history of violence against each other. Gordon was charged with the attempted murder of Gilharry and Gilharry’s brother back in 2013.
