Officers involved in Dyandre Chi pursuit/fatal shooting held as investigations continue

Posted: Sunday, March 26, 2023. 2:21 pm CST.

By Aaron Humes: The Police Department has announced that the officers involved in the pursuit and fatal shooting of Alberto Dyandre “Yadiel” Chi are detained pending the outcome of the investigation now being led by Superintendent of Police Gerald Jones.

Chi was shot in the abdomen after being pursued along with five other motorcycle riders along the riverside in Orange Walk Town Saturday night, dying at the Northern Regional Hospital. Also injured was a 17-year-old minor.

The police account is that a patrol team along Riverside Street near Boundary Road came across three motorcycles that they attempted to stop; however, the drivers sped off and those aboard the motorcycles fired shots at the pursuing police team who fired back.

This is presently being investigated through a canvass of the pursuit route looking for expended shells and surveillance footage, as well as the interview and recording of statements from witnesses and review of surveillance cameras along the route.

The separate criminal and internal investigations ordered by Commissioner of Police Chester Williams will determine in the former case, with the review and direction of the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions, whether any criminality took place; and in the latter, whether was any breach of Department policy including Pursuit and Human Rights and Use of Force Policies.

Along with their condolences, the Minister and Commissioner of Police have assured the family and public that the matter will be completely, thoroughly and transparently investigated and that those with knowledge and information pertinent thereto should come forward to assist. They also promise timely updates on the progress of the investigation.
