Political rumble over Carmelita land settled

Posted: Sunday, March 26, 2023. 8:07 pm CST.

By Aaron Humes: A potentially embarrassing stumble developed a few weeks ago when reports surfaced that Orange Walk East area representative and Minister of Health Kevin Bernard had apparently put a two-acre parcel of land in the village of Carmelita, known as the Tower Area, in his name.

Former area rep and United Democratic Party standard-bearer Elodio Aragon Jr had set up the area as a green space in the village, but the Minister apparently got it in his own name and fenced it in.

The Minister has since informed that the land has been returned, after Bernard in an interview called out “political mischief” and advised to “wait and see” what would develop in the area.

What has happened is that the land has been transferred back to the Government as of March 8. According to Bernard, “Aragon Junior is only, quote, “crying” about this “because of major works taking place in O.W. East in the town and other villages.”

Aragon hit back, saying the residents of that area – nearly 300 families – deserve and should have the park intended to be built there and returning the land was “the right thing” to do.

While he suggests the fence around the property should also be removed, Bernard says he is focusing on developing a new subdivision in the village containing 506 residential lots, 48 commercial lots, 101 agriculture parcels and open space, among other amenities.
