By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The Belize Men’s National Team (BMNT) fell 2-0 to the Dominican Republic in the Concacaf Nations League (CNL) at the Estadio Panamericano in San Cristóbal outside Santo Domingo in the Dominican Republic. That was the team’s fifth loss against a single draw in the CNL B.

The team created a couple of opportunities in the second half, the last one by Warren Moss who entered the game as a sub and displayed an eagerness and drive which unfortunately couldn’t translate itself into a goal for the BMNT.

In turn, shortly after Moss subbed for Darrel Myvett in the 54’, the Dominican Republic got their second goal off a second low shot, this time by Nowend Lorenzo in the 60’.

Earlier, at the half Kyle Flowers replaced Donell Arzu and Denmark Casey entered for Horace Avila for Belize at the half.

Coach David Pérez made two more changes trying to move up his troops into the Dominican last quarter. Trimayne Harris substituted for Krisean Lopez in the 67’ and Andir Chi took the place of Eldon Reneau in the 68’ but to no avail as the score remained 2-0.

Despite Belize’s good start, the Dominican Republic soon levelled play and got the go-ahead goal in the the 13’ when Edarlyn Reyes unleashed a low grass burner that went from left to right between the legs of Asrel Sutherland and beyond Charles Tillett’s reach.

The Dominicans had more breaks during the first half forcing goalkeeper Tillett and the defensive line to work extra hard to keep them at bay after the initial goal. Must stress though, that goalkeeper Tillett had an excellent performance. Otherwise, the score might have been much different.

In the end, the second half proved the same as the first and the Dominicans got their insurance goal.

Belize are fortunate that the new Concacaf League format cut relegation from League B so despite finishing last in the group the Belize Men’s National team (BMNT) will remain in League H for the next championship.

Initially, Pérez had made two changes to the lineup after the Guatemala match inserting Donell Arzu for Kyle Flowers in defense and Horace Avila for Jovaunn Ramos in the midfield, but the BMNT looked rather ineffective on Friday. They didn’t seem to have the force that they displayed against Guatemala. Though that was also a loss, a 2-1 loss, the BMNT left the fans hoping for better days. But today against the Dominican Republic, despite the good run at the end, the BMMT left us wanting.

Hopefully, the FFB will from now forward get the BMNT a number of friendlies against national teams so that when our BMNT play in competition games, we don’t go testing the squad.

In the end, we earned a solitary point to the French Guiana’s 11, Guatemala’s ten, and the Dominican Republic’s eight.

French Guiana and Guatemala play the final game tonight at 8:00 pm in Guatemala to determine Group D’s winners.
