By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Today, Taiwan’s Former President, Ma Ying-jeou arrived in China in an effort to promote peace and improve relations between China and Taiwan, Reuters report.
Deputy head of China-Taiwan affairs, Chen Yuanfeng welcomed him to China.
Meanwhile, the visit has been largely criticized by the ruling Democratic Progressive Party of Ma’s successor Tsai Ing-wen.
Before departing Taiwan, Ma said that he was happy to be going on the trip.
Ma served as Taiwan’s president from 2008 to 2016 and if the first former or current Taiwanese president to visit China since the defeated Republic of China government fled to Taiwan in 1949 at the end of a civil war with the Communists.
There is heightened tensions between Taiwan and China as China keeps military pressure and continues its efforts to garner the support of Taiwan’s allies.
