International News: Honduran official says Taiwan must vacate embassy after switch to China

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Today, Honduras Deputy Foreign Minister, Antonio Garcia issued an order via local TV saying that Taiwan must vacate its embassy in Tegucigalpa in 30 days, US News reports.

Honduras has now severed 82 years of diplomatic ties with Taiwan to establish ties with China.

There have been heightened tensions between Taiwan and China since China views Taiwan as its territory and has long vowed to “reunify” the self-governing democratic island.

In addition, Garcia noted that China could invest some $10 billion in Honduras to boost the labour market.

Honduras has since issued a statement saying that it recognizes China as the only legitimate government that represents all of China and that Taiwan is an “inseparable part of Chinese territory.”

Taiwan now has 13 formal allies including Belize.
