Jared Ranguy could face up to 40 years in prison before parole if he pleads guilty to triple murder

Posted: Monday, March 27, 2023. 9:18 pm CST.

By Breaking Belize News Staff: Today, Jared Ranguy, who is accused of triple homicide, appeared in the High Court of Belize for a sentence indication hearing.

The hearing, which was requested through Ranguy’s attorney, was to find out what the sentence would be if Ranguy entered a plea of guilty, instead of going to trial.

Justice Ricardo O’Neil Sancroft said that Ranguy would be facing 3 life sentences without the possibility of parole until after serving 40 years, with the 10 years served on remand deducted from the sentence.

Ranguy is due back in court on Thursday, March 30, where he will either accept the sentence and plead guilty or the matter will go to trial. Ranguy is represented by court-appointed attorneys, Hubert Elrington S.C. and Orson ‘OJ’ Elrington of Elrington & Company, while the Crown is represented by Crown Counsel Portia Staine Ferguson.

Ranguy stands accused of the November 2012 murders of his mother, Karen Skeen Vellos, sister, Teena Vellos and stepfather, Richard Vellos. Further allegations are that he was under the influence of drugs at the time. He was granted bail in the sum of $30,000 back in 2021, but was unable to post bail and remains on remand at the Belize Central Prison.
