Taiwan and Honduras, 82 years of bilateral relations and friendship broken

Posted: Monday, March 27, 2023. 10:34 am CST.

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: The Taiwan Embassy in Belize has joined the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Taiwan in expressing “deep regret” at the severing of bilateral relations and friendship between Taiwan and Honduras.

“82 years of friendship and bilateral cooperation bringing real benefit to the people were overlooked by the government of President Xiomara Castro,” the Taiwan Embassy noted.

“The Castro government bought into Beijing’s barrage of empty promises, despite our repeated warnings urging caution and prudence. Unfortunately Honduras attempted to draw Taiwan into a diplomatic bidding contest, by asking for several billion USD in aid, all the while engaging in slander against Taiwan,” the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Taiwan noted.

The Ministry also reminded China and their authorities “that the use of empty promises to poach Taiwan’s allies and squeeze Taiwan’s diplomatic space is utterly disrespectful to the feelings of the Taiwanese people and threatens to further strain cross-strait relations.”

In addition, the Ministry reiterated that Taiwan is a sovereign nation and not a part of China.

“Taiwan remains unbowed and continues to work with our allies and like-minded partners as a force for good in the world, to uphold regional peace and stability,” the statement ended.
