Why police are keeping their eyes on Leadership Intervention Unit workers

Posted: Monday, March 27, 2023. 9:53 pm CST.

By Aaron Humes: Peace has broken out all over the Old Capital – but something that was hard-won is also hard-fought to keep.

Questioned today about a picture showing a police officer apparently ‘guarding’ crews employed by the Leadership Intervention Unit (LIU), Commissioner of Police Chester Williams said that Police remain on guard against losing their hard-won gains: “We have many of these young men who are working in different areas and just to make sure they work in a safe environment, we would normally put patrols in the area. You see, when we have peace and these young men co-existing with each other, it takes the action of one silly person to just blow everything up, all over again.”

The Commissioner emphasized that the protection of these individuals who are cooperating with them is critical: “As much as we are engaging them in different forms of employment, we still have to ensure that it is done in a safe environment; that no one is going to use that opportunity to target somebody.” As he pointed out, it would be egg on the face of the Department if someone is killed unexpectedly on their watch while working to maintain the peace.

The LIU employs young men in various community and civic service projects for a stipend in addition to offering various training to hone life skills.
