Youth initiatives in Stann Creek District: 100-plus Dangriga youths graduate from job preparedness training and community hub in Independence

Posted: Monday, March 27, 2023. 10:54 am CST.

By Aaron Humes: The Stann Creek District has seen two recent initiatives reaching out to youths in its major municipalities – Dangriga and Independence – and surrounding villages.

On Saturday, some 108 youths from the Dangriga area graduated from a job preparedness training course administered by the office of area representative and Minister of State in the Ministry of Education, Dr Louis Zabaneh.

According to Dr Zabaneh, “This has been able to attract a call center to the Dangriga area…we made a call to persons in our area who may have interest in working and particularly with a call center. At that time, [there was] nothing concrete that a call center would come to Dangriga, but [these] persons came together and they made the effort, made the sacrifice over that period with the training, and that sent out a strong message, where two weeks ago we started to get interest from call centers.”

One of those Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) agencies is Ready Call Center, whose manager Nadia Ramirez indicated the company is ready to expand to Dangriga in the coming weeks. Dr Zabaneh has committed to further training in order to reduce unemployment and provide opportunities in the Culture Capital.

Meanwhile, in Independence, the Department of Youth Services hosted a Southern Youth Fest on Friday where it launched a Youth Community Hub and application.

Director Kevin Cadle said the Department in partnership with Humana People to People and others is working to develop programming that will build capacity in employability and trade skills development.

The Department also received a vehicle in support of the UNICEF-backed U-Report and Nexus application, which offers youth an opportunity to weigh in on key issues and events affecting them and to promote social interaction online.

The Hub is open to students from Independence/Mango Creek and from as far north as Georgetown to as far south as Bella Vista and northern Toledo District.
