62 women officers in Police Department promoted

Posted: Tuesday, March 28, 2023. 10:54 am CST.

By Aaron Humes: Amid the latest onslaught of bad news involving the Police Department, there is some good news to report: on March 17, a group of 62 women police officers was honoured at a special ceremony to announce their promotions in rank.

Commissioner of Police Chester Williams confirmed on Monday that the promotions have been approved by his office for the ranks of Corporal, Sergeant, and Inspector, and by the Security Services Commission for ranks up to Senior Superintendent.

As the Commissioner reported to the press at the time, “These women being promoted today were from among the officers who set the recent promotional exams and had gone through the promotional board interviews and were recommended for promotions. So, all we did was select the women from that list, and we did the promotion today. Oftentimes we’ve heard managers, [heads of departments] speaking that they do appreciate women, but showing appreciation must be done by your conduct and not by words. In the Department, we are serious about making sure that we show the world that we love and appreciate the women who work with us.”

And as several of the women officers interviewed noted, they are mothers and wives off the job and often have to juggle those responsibilities with their police work.

Only two women have ever been promoted as high as Deputy Commissioner of Police: Maureen Leslie and most recently Dezerie Philips Magdaleno in 2020. As we reported at that time, the women complement of the Department is around 440 of a total of 2,400, with more being recruited.
