Barrier Reef-damaging cargo ship removed; penalties to be assessed

Posted: Tuesday, March 28, 2023. 10:43 pm CST.

By Aaron Humes: A salvage operation at Gallows Point to remove a Panamanian-registered cargo ship, which ran aground on Sunday morning, was successfully concluded this morning after earlier unsuccessful efforts.

Acting Port Commissioner for the Belize Port Authority, Darlin Gaitan, told reporters that initial assessments show that “what we have here is so far a case of environmental damage, but not pollution from the ship in terms of any discharge overboard.”

An investigation has been opened into what caused the accident as Gaitan further explained: “Currently the investigation is ongoing, so that would have to be upon a conclusion that there would be any charges to the ship. But, in terms of the environmental aspect of it, that would be the Department of the Environment. So, I wouldn’t be able to comment on the DOE’s charges or any negotiations with the ship.”
