Guatemala rout French Guiana 4-0, top Concacaf League B Group, qualify to Gold Cup

By Rubén Morales Iglesias: While Belize lost 2-0 to the Dominican Republic on Monday evening, Guatemala had a field day with French Guiana dispatching the South American side 4-0 at the Doroteo Guamuch Flores Stadium in Guatemala City.

But it wasn’t as easy as it looks. The Guatemalans suffered for the first hour. Nothing that they did produced the desired result, until Rubio Rubín Méndez nailed French Guiana with a header in the 60’.

That goal broke the camel’s back and three more followed. Marlon Sequén converted in the

76’, Nicolás Samayoa in the 80’, and Jorge Aparicio closed it off in the 90’+3.

Guatemala totalled 14 points, topped Group D, and qualified to the Concacaf Gold Cup. As group winners, they also move up to the Concacaf National League A.

French Guiana finished second with 11 points.

The Dominican Republic took third place with eight points. Belize finished last with one point.
