International News: 40 people die in deadly fire at migrant center in Mexico

Posted: Tuesday, March 28, 2023. 6:37 pm CST.

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Daily, thousands of migrants take the dangerous journey leaving their homes in Central and South America in hopes of finding the American dream.

On Monday, that dream became a nightmare for 40 migrants that died during a fire in a migrant processing center in Ciudad Juarez,Mexico.

They were from  Guatemala, Honduras, Venezuela, El Salvador, Colombia and Ecuador.

Mexican President, Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador said that the migrants had set mattresses on fire as part of a protest, BBC reports.

“It was related to a protest they started, we think, when they learned that they’d be deported,” he said.

“They didn’t think that would cause this terrible tragedy,” he added.

Twenty nine people were also injured in the blaze.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection said that they “prepared to receive and process those who were injured in the fire and are being transported via ambulance from Mexican to US medical facilities for treatment”.

UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres has since called for a “thorough investigation”.
